Whether you’re looking for vegan skincare products or you’re just a regular consumer, you may have heard about Wet n Wild. They have become a household name and many people have tried their products. However, are they vegan?
Animal testing
Despite being one of the most well known cruelty free brands, Wet n Wild is not entirely cruelty free. This is because Wet n Wild is not 100% vegan, but instead uses animal-derived ingredients in its products.
Wet n Wild has been accused of lying about its cruelty-free credentials. Some say that the company’s official statement about not testing animals in China is misleading. They also question the company’s commitment to end animal testing in its supply chain.
In China, a company can get around the animal testing requirements by claiming their products are “non-special use.” Non-special use cosmetics are not designed to function, and so do not require animal testing. These types of cosmetics include skin care, nail products, and hair care.
Non-comedogenic claims
Founded in 1975, Wet n Wild is a cosmetics manufacturer that makes products for all skin types, from babies to men. Wet n Wild’s products are available in almost every cosmetic retailer, from Walmart to Target. Some of its products are formulated with parabens, a known skin irritant. Despite the buzz, Wet n Wild does not advertise their products as hypoallergenic.
Wet n Wild does not have to make the biggest and baddest claims to be the best at what they do. The company has a clear mission statement that enumerates the important steps in the process of producing its products. This includes, but is not limited to, reducing its environmental impact. In addition, Wet n Wild has made a commitment to the end of animal testing.
Parabens
Among other products, Wet N Wild sells makeup and foundation. They also produce mascara, lipstick, and primer. They are sold in CVS, Target, and Walmart.
Parabens are chemicals that are used in cosmetics, food packaging, and pharmaceutical products. These chemicals are considered endocrine disruptors, which means they interfere with the body’s natural hormone balance. These chemicals can cause skin irritation and have been linked to ecological harm. They can also affect marine life, including sea creatures.
Parabens have been shown to cause human breast tumor cells to proliferate in vitro. This is due to their ability to mimic the effects of estradiol, a cellular hormone regulated by the estrogen receptor.
Mainland China
Despite its claims to be a cruelty-free brand, Wet n Wild isn’t actually cruelty-free. In fact, Wet n Wild has been spotted selling some products in mainland China. This is despite being certified as a cruelty-free brand by PETA in January of 2020.
Wet n Wild doesn’t test on animals during production. However, animal testing is still required in mainland China, as stated in the law. In fact, the Chinese government could even take away products if they need to be tested. This is called post-market animal testing.
Wet n Wild also says it is a leader in cruelty-free beauty. However, many customers are confused about the company’s animal testing policies.
