Forty years ago, when the typical public school was built, school boards did not understand the seriousness of the threat that chemical exposures posed to human health. Nor was there any understanding of the special vulnerabilities that children have to chemical exposures. But after the Love Canal dumpsite crisis and the childhood leukemia clusters from across the nation, we know better. Unfortunately, many school boards continue to ignore the scientific evidence and propose building public schools on or near contaminated land. Source: Child Proofing Our Communities

This website offers the tools necessary to introduce legislation to prevent schools in your state from being built on or near contaminated land, including a sample bill, talking points, a press release, a fact pack, research, and other  background information.

Special thanks to the Child Proofing our Communities Campaign  for providing the information for this issue, including sample legislation and most of the support documents.
